Woman with sunburn - Isolated
Amy Walters Thinkstock

As the hot months of summer approach there are some things to keep in mind before laying out in the sun or hopping in the tanning booth. According to the Melanoma Research Alliance, Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer and is spreading rapidly across the country.

An easy way of remembering how to spot the signs of Melanoma is to remember your ABC’s. The ABCDE’s of Melanoma can help you recognize the signs of early development. We should all be aware of the various signs of developing skin cancer. An unusual mole, marking or any changes to the skin can be a possible sign of melanoma. We should make a note of the details on any moles on our bodies, as changes in color, shape or size can signal the development of melanoma in the skin.

Check out our tips on how to prevent Melanoma this summer.

Stay in the Shade

Stay cool in the shade or avoid the sun altogether during the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Wear a Hat

Wide-brimmed hats offer protection from UV rays for your ears and neck. They are a better option than baseball caps, which fail to cover your ears.

Use Sunscreen

Use sunscreen with an SPF of no less than 30. This offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays.   Don’t forget to re-apply every two hours and more often if you are sweating or in water.

Wear Sunglasses

Wrap around sunglasses prevent UV rays from entering the eyes and protect the skin around them as well. Make sure they have 100% UV protection.

Avoid Tanning Booths and Beds

Exposure to indoor tanning beds or booths can increase the likelihood of developing skin cancer. They can also cause the skin to age prematurely and develop wrinkles.
