It happens every time there is a winter storm in the forecast - we hurry out for shovels, rock salt, bread, eggs and milk. The recent blizzard caused many of us to scramble to get ready.   So are you prepared are you for the next winter storm?

Winter storm preparedness is so much more than just buying milk and eggs. We have these five helpful tips from the American Red Cross of New Jersey.

  • 1

    Stock Up

Have at least a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food as well as a seven-day supply of medications.

  • 2

    Protect Pipes

To prevent frozen pipes - run water, even at a trickle, to help prevent them from freezing.

  • 3

    Avoid Fire Hazards

Space heaters should sit on a level, hard surface and kept at least three feet away from anything flammable.

  • 4

    Stay Powered and Connected

Plan for potential power outages. Have flashlights on hand and keep cell phones and portable chargers fully charged.

  • 5

    Be Safe On The Road

Make sure your car has an emergency kit, water, snacks and blankets and jumper cables and flares in case you get stuck. Keep the gas tank full to prevent the fuel line from freezing. Of course, if possible, stay off the roads.
