In one of his final acts as Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie has signed a bill to rename Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City after State Senator Jim Whelan.

Senator Whelan began his public service while he was a teacher in the Atlantic City school system, serving as a city councilman from 1982 to 1990 and then as mayor from 1990 to 2001. In 2005, Whelan was elected to the General Assembly and then was elected to the state senate in 2007. Whelan passed away this past August at the age of 68.

The statement that accompanies the bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, reads,

This bill designates Boardwalk Hall, located at 2301 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, New Jersey, in memory of James “Jim” Whelan to commemorate his outstanding service to Atlantic City and the State. Under the bill, Boardwalk Hall will be renamed the “Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.”

In a post on Twitter earlier today, Mazzeo said, "The @SenJimWhelan Boardwalk Hall has a nice ring to it. Very happy to see BH renamed in Jim’s honor."
