MAYS LANDING - The boyfriend of an Egg Harbor Township homicide victim is accused of delivering the hammer blows that killed her.

Lashawn Smith, 36, of the township, is under indictment on a first-degree murder charge for the November 3 death of Sarah Phillips, 28, according to the office of Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner. He also faces third- and fourth-degree weapons counts.

Smith has remained in the Atlantic County Justice Facility since his November detention hearing.

Egg Harbor Township police responded to a report of an injured woman insice a South Zion Road home at 5:04 AM on November 3. Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsy results placed the cause of death as multiple blunt-force and sharp-force injuries, and the manner of death as homicide.

Local police and county Major Crimes investigators allege that Smith beat the vicitm with a hammer. They did not elaborate regarding Smith's whereabouts at the time of his arrest, evidence that supports the arrest, or regarding Smith's legal representation.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy leads the State's case.

Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
