A woman in South Carolina is reporting that her sister is out of a considerable sum of money after sending funds to a social media scammer posing as Dierks Bentley.

According to The Herald, the Rock Hill, SC woman told local police that her sister had sent $160k in cashier’s checks and gift cards to a person claiming to be the singer, according to an incident report. The impostor allegedly met the victim on Twitter, and they shared text messages later.

The incident will need to be investigated by federal authorities, according to local police.

This appears to be the latest in a string of troublesome scams involving celebrity imposters. In the country community, a group of artists decided in June to take action against these scams. Blake SheltonKeith UrbanMaren MorrisLindsay EllJon PardiHunter HayesTrace AdkinsCole SwindellRascal FlattsKelly Clarkson and more put together a three-minute clip warning fans about social media impostors.

The clip, titled PSA: Imposters on Social Media, has the artists informing fans that the only account they use is the one with a blue verified check-mark next to their name, and that's the only one that should be trusted. It also instructs fans not to give out their personal data, as the real artists will never ask for such information.
