Year after year, most of us pack on at least a pound or more during the holiday and keep the extra weight permanently...and it all starts with Thanksgiving. For many of people this is just a kick off of the overindulgence, but we can still enjoy it without going overboard. Thanksgiving is a time to really enjoy our family and friends. Take the focus off food and put it on quality time with the people you love.

Check out these simple tips and great recipes to lighten up your Thanksgiving from Eating Well.

  • 1

    Eat Breakfast

Don't  show up to dinner famished.  It is difficult to control your urge to eat everything in sight.

  • 2

Take time to savor the flavors

By eating slowly you will feel more satisfied, and it is less likely you will overeat. It takes about 20 minutes for our brain to tell our belly that we are full.

  • 3

    Be Choosy

Survey the food and pick your favorites before diving in. Choose the special foods you don't usually eat the rest of the year.

  • 4

    Go Light On The Booze

Watch the alcohol, which can pack on a ton of calories. Pace yourself and drink a glass of water between alcoholic beverages.

    Cook Lighter

Whether you are hosting the party or bringing a dish for dinner, make your recipes with less fat, sugar and calories.
