A man from Egg Harbor Township has been charged with murder after prosecutors say he killed his girlfriend early Friday morning by repeatedly hitting her with a hammer.

36-year-old Lashawn Smith has been charged with first degree murder, third degree possession of a weapon, and fourth degree unlawful possession of a weapon in connection to the death of his girlfriend, 28 year-old Sarah Phillips.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office says a 911 call was received by the Egg Harbor Township Police Department around 5:00 Friday morning in reference to an injured female at a home on South Zion Road. Officers responded and located the injured woman, identified as Phillips, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation by the prosecutor’s office and EHT Police resulted in the arrest of Smith and it is alleged Smith struck Phillips multiple times with a hammer.
