Emergency construction is set to start Wednesday night on the 96th Street Bridge in Stone Harbor.

Cape May County officials say that during an inspection of the 96th Street Bridge in Stone Harbor, inspectors found issues with two transverse steel beams in the movable part of the bridge. Contractors inspecting the bridge, upon discovering the problem, limited traffic to a 15 ton weight limit and all trucks and buses must now use Avalon Boulevard/Ocean Drive to access Stone Harbor.

The repairs will require the bridge to close for four nights, beginning Wednesday, June 20th, from 10PM to 5AM. A detour will be posted.

The county says the 96th Street Bridge was constructed in 1930 and features a “rall type bascule” span and is possibly one of only six in the nation of its kind. As a result of this type of construction, the movable span is deemed to be of historical significance.
