“If you have to go outside, you should definitely be dressing in layers and cover any exposed skin,” said Christopher Rinn, assistant state commissioner of health for Public Health Infrastructure, Laboratories and Emergency Preparedness.

Rinn said anyone who plans to go outside should dress in layers.

“Dressing in layers is particularly important because it acts as an insulator for the body,” Rinn said. “Wear a hat to retain body heat, and use a scarf or a knit mask to cover your face.”

In the event of a power outage, people should have extra food, blankets, flashlights and batteries available.

“You should always have your cell phone charged and ready in the event of an emergency, and if you’re on medication, have plenty of that on hand just in case,” Rinn said. “You can also keep the same items in your car in the event that you get stuck, along with flares if you need to notify police and passing motorists that you are disabled.”

Other cold weather tips include the following:

  • Wear a water-resistant coat and shoes.
  • Take precautions to make sure you don’t fall on ice.
  • Plan ahead and have your home well prepared.
  • Check on elderly neighbors.
