Interactive Map Paints a Bleak Picture of Bridges in South Jersey

With all of the talk about the state's transportation trust fund going broke later this year, a new interactive map shows just how bad some bridges are in South Jersey.

An interactive map from NJSpotlight.com allows users to click on any bridge in the state to reveal its average daily traffic and how its deck, superstructure, and substructure are rated. All of the information provided is from the National Bridge Inventory 2014 from the Federal Highway Administration.

Some bridges and overpasses, like many on the Atlantic City Expressway, for example, have a rating of 100, which means a bridge is in overall good condition. However, some bridges, like the Ocean Drive bridge over Corson's Inlet has a rating of only 11 due to a poor superstructure and substructure.

Overall, Atlantic County would need to spend almost $105 million to bring all of the bridges in the county up to par.  In Cape May County, that price tag jumps to $257 million.
