A man from Mays Landing is facing a list of charges after allegedly fighting with officers during a traffic stop in Atlantic City and fleeing in his vehicle.

The Atlantic City Police Department reports two officers conducted a motor vehicle stop in the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue around 1:00 Wednesday afternoon. According to accounts, as the officers approached, one of them asked the driver, 20-year-old Elijah McCoy of Mays Landing, to lower the heavily tinted windows on his car. Cops say McCoy only lowered the window slightly. Once open, officers smelled raw, unburnt marijuana.

According to a press release,

The officers attempted investigate the scent, but McCoy refused their orders to exit the vehicle. After advising McCoy he was under arrest and to exit the vehicle, he again refused. The officers then attempted to place McCoy in custody. McCoy first assaulted Officer Dodson and then Officer Valles. McCoy put the vehicle in driver and sped off with Officer Valles still attempting to arrest him. The driver side door slammed against Officer Valles as McCoy sped away. McCoy eventually stopped his vehicle at Georgia and Atlantic Avenues where he was taken into custody. The officers could not locate the source of the marijuana odor.

McCoy is facing a list of charges, including aggravated assault by automobile, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, eluding, obstruction of justice, and several motor vehicle summons. McCoy was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
