New Jersey’s First Taste of Winter Comes This Weekend

New Jersey still looks to be getting its first taste of winter this weekend.

The first sample comes this afternoon as a Winter Weather Advisory in in effect from 4 p.m. through Saturday morning at 7 a.m. as a wintry mix of sleet, snow and some freezing rain develops north of Interstate 78 that could cause some hazardous travel. 1-2 inches of snow is expected to fall according to the National Weather Service’s latest briefing on the weekend storms.

The precipitation will likely stay rain across the rest of the state making way for sunshine by Saturday afternoon with no threat of precipitation.

Meanwhile the rain and low clouds continue to cause travel delays with the website FlightAware.com reporting 90 minute delays on arrivals at Newark  1 hour, 45 minute delays at Philadelphia and 45 minute delays at LaGuardia.

The second course moves in late Sunday morning with precipitation beginning as snow in the afternoon before mixing with sleet and then turning to rain on Sunday night as a warm front moves north. The rain will end on Monday.

The changeover will be from south to north with less than an inch of snow falling in south and central counties. The changeover will take a bit longer in Hunterdon, Morris, Sussex and Warren counties and 2-4 inches of snow could fall before the turnover and could cause problems with the Monday morning commute.

Winter has come to other areas of the country. A storm that’s already dumped up to 2 feet of snow in parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin has draped many communities in skin-stinging cold. Winter storm and ice warnings are in effect through much of today for parts of six states in the Midwest, including Texas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

Temperatures in Montana and Idaho have fallen below minus 25 degrees. Officials in Rapid City, S.D., say it’s too cold for ice skating.
