Longport, NJ becomes the first beach in Atlantic County to prohibit smoking.

More than a dozen New Jersey beaches have banned smoking and now Longport has been added to that list. According to Longport Mayor Nicholas Russo the town voted to ban smoking at its municipal building, recreation facilities, and parks.

First time violators will face a $250 fine, second violation will be $500, and any violation past two will be $1,000.

Similar bills has been proposed on a state level to ban smoking on all New Jersey beaches, however Governor Chris Christie has said the decision should be left up to the individual towns and vetoed the bill. The state did pass a law to ban smoking in state parks and beaches.
