A man who took a relative hostage in a Ventnor Heights home was shot and killed by police Monday night in an exchange of gunfire.

6 ABC Philadelphia is reporting that police were called to the home  on the 700 block of N. Burghley Ave. shortly before 7pm Monday.

Police arrived on the scene to a man and woman who had already exited the home. The couple’s adult son was inside the house and armed, sources say. Area police departments responded to the scene to assist Ventnor Police.

SWAT was also called out to the scene.

The son exited the home with a gun and was shot by police,  sources told CBS3. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

At this time, there is no word on whether the man shot at police. It is not known how many people were injured.

A number of ambulances rushed to the scene.
