Before drugs were manufactured in factories, pharmacists prepared them by hand according to recipes in small quantities. Technology has advanced to enable drugs to be made in large amounts, but the need for customized dosage strengths and form still exists. Compounding is the problem-solving pharmacy service prescribers and patients use to get the medication they need.

Compounding combines an ageless art with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, allowing specially trained pharmacy professionals to prepare customized medications to meet each patient’s specific needs. The demand for professional compounding continues to increase due to the limited variety of strengths and dosage forms that are commercially available. Healthcare professionals and patients realize these do not meet many patients’ needs, and that these patients often have a better response to a customized dosage form that is “just what the doctor ordered."

Compounding pharmacies can provide the unique dosage and the best dose for each person.  Pharmacist Mark Taylor, owner of Curexa Compounding and Specialty Pharmacy, explains more with Robin Stoloff.
