Nearly 3000 lives were lost that day at the World Trade Center from 2 planes that brought down the towers, another 44 died aboard Flight 93 when it went down in Shanksville,Pennsylvania and nearly 200 at the Pentagon when a jet sturck the building.

Of the lives lost that day, 38 were from Middletown and 147 from Monmouth County as part of 700 who died from New Jersey.

Walk With Joe

The annual Walk With Joe Memorial 5K Walk to honor the memory of Manalapan resident Patrick “Joe” Driscoll and his fellow passengers aboard Flight 93 on September 11, 2001 takes place at the Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan beginning at 10AM. The walk benefits a number of charities including the Samaritan Center in Manalapan, NJ; the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA; the Christopher Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of West Virginia; the Child Advocacy Center in Freehold, NJ; the American Recreational Military Services (ARMS); the Freehold Open Door Food Bank; Monmouth Battlefield State Park; the Monmouth County Mount Mitchell Park; Hurricane Katrina relief efforts; youth athletic programs; the RJM Foundation (a special needs youth organization); and non-profit organizations serving the Manalapan area with humanitarian aid and programs. Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund Car Wash
Plainsboro firefighters will mark 9/11 with a Car Wash from 9AM-3PM at the firehouse located at 405 Plainsboro Road to benefit the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund. The fund honors the memory of FDNY Rescue 4 Firefighter Terry Farrell, who died while fighting the fires and making rescues at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Rain date is Sunday, September 9.

Medford Event

The Medford Cultural Arts Commission (MCAC) will host a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. to recognize individuals and organizations whose contributions made possible last year’s 10-year 9/11 anniversary observance in Freedom Park. The reception will be held at the Medford Arts Center at 18 North Main Street in Medford.

Toms River Memorial
The Toms River Township Fire Departments will hold their annual September 11 Memorial Service at the East Dover Firehouse on Fischer Boulevard beginning at 9:45AM.

Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The Monmouth County Park System hosts a Memorial Ceremony at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, Atlantic Highlands, the site of Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial, rain or shine, beginning at 5PM. The ceremony will be held rain or shine, and all are welcome to attend. Speakers are Freeholders John Curley and Lillian Burry.

Monmouth County’s 9/11 Memorial has three symbolic components: a timeline walkway to recollect the events of September 11, 2001; a stone base carved with the names, ages and hometowns of the 147 county residents who lost their lives that day; and an eagle sculpture with a beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center towers.

Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook will have extended hours on Sunday, September 9 -Tuesday, September 11 from 8:00am to 11:00pm. Parking will be available on Tuesday, 9/11 at East Point Plaza, 2390 Highway 36, Atlantic Highlands, and shuttle buses will be provided to and from the Memorial from 5-9pm.

Brick Remembrance
The Township of Brick holds a remembrance ceremony and candlelight vigil at 6PM at Windward Beach Park at the Angel in Anguish Monument. Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno is scheduled to attend. 8 Brick residents lost their lives on 9/11/01.

Holmdel Township Remembrance
Holmdel's 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held in front of Holmdel Township Town Hall from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Remember 9/11: Reflections & Memories From New Jersey
The New Jersey State Museum in Trenton hosts an exhibit Remember 9/11: Reflections & Memories From New Jersey through September 30 that recalls the events of 9/11 from the perspective of New Jersey residents. The exhibit includes twisted steel beams from the fallen World Trade Center, images of the recovery, and personal stories from the survivors.
