Atlantic City Electric is reminding customers to take precautions when someone claiming to represent the utility contacts them asking for money.

Scammers are targeting Atlantic City Electric customers with a Green Dot MoneyPak scam. Area residents are being called and told their electric bill is delinquent and service will be shut off unless the customer purchases a Green Dot MoneyPak from stores like CVS, Rite Aid and WaWa. Victims are given instructions to call a scammer telephone number with their credit card account number and pin. Once the scammer obtains the card’s identifying information, the value is then downloaded, swept, and stolen. These transactions are untraceable.

If you receive such a call, obviously do not follow their instructions and contact police.
