A sad story out of Bridgeton where police say a man, believed to be homeless, who was apparently searching for warm clothes or a place to sleep died after getting trapped in a clothing collection bin.

Police found 50-year-old Joseph Hanshaw dangling from the clothing box outside the Salvation Army Church in Bridgeton.

Police tell The Press of Atlantic City Hanshaw was trapped by the hinged door. It took firefighters several minutes to dismantle the door and free Hanshaw. He was pronounced dead at a medical facility.

Hanshaw’s death occurred as Bridgeton city officials were developing a plan to use churches and volunteers to start warming centers where homeless people could spend a cold night.
