While most people are making resolutions to get more active in the new year, something we may not think about is getting more sleep. In fact about one third of Americans don’t get the recommended amount  shut eye.

Sleep affects almost every aspect of our life, yet so many people don't realize just how important it is.  Here's what getting a good night sleep can really mean for you.

    Concentration

    Here's reason one for why getting sleep is imperative. Lack of sleep controls our concentration. How are we able to do our absolute best at work if we aren't getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep at night? Having an enough of sleep will improve mindfulness and concentration.

    Mood

    A good night's rest means a happier more pleasant you in the morning. Waking up and feeling refreshed is a great way to start your day. Your co-workers will like you a lot more too.

    Healthy Immune System

    Good sleep is essential to good health. The body is able to repair itself within those good hours of sleep. Your body is doing so many things throughout the day that at night we have the privilege of relaxing and recharging for the next day. Sleep even effects our immune system. In order for our immune systems to stay strong and fight off sickness we need adequate sleep.

    Hormones

    Our bodies release a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin helps you to begin to wind down for bed. Getting a good amount of sleep helps the body to function properly and produce needed melatonin.

    Stable Weight

    When you're sleep deprived, it impacts your hunger and fullness hormones too. Lack of sleep can lead to overeating and extra pounds. We tend to snack the longer we stay awake making it harder for food to digest. If you get to bed a decent time you're less likely to begin snacking.
