Trisha Yearwood’s Famous Chili Recipe & Georgia’s Not So Famous Chili Recipe

Trisha Yearwood has long been known for her great singing voice, but she’s also a very talented cook.

Her show ‘Trisha’s Southern Kitchen’ premiered on the Food Network this past Saturday.  So she stopped by ‘The Today Show’ to whip up this healthy “fancy” chili.  Trisha Yearwood calls it fancy because she sneaks a lot of vegetables into the recipe to make it healthier.

Here’s the recipe for Trisha’s Fancy Chili:

1 Tablespoon olive oil

2 garlic cloves, minced

1/2 cup chopped green onion

1/2 pound lean ground beef

2 Tablespoons hot chili powder

1 – 28 ounce can fire roasted dice tomatoes

1 – 15 ounce black beans, rinsed and drained

1 medium red bell pepper, cored, seeded and diced

4 carrots, peeled and grated

1/2 teaspoon brown sugar

Pinch of salt

White rice, for serving

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.  Add the garlic and green onion and cook for about a minute.  Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.  Stir in the chili powder until fully combined.  Add the tomatoes, beans, bell pepper, carrot, brown sugar and salt.  Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.  Cover and simmer the chili for 15 minutes.  Serve over white rice.

Serving size – 4 servings

That sounds good!  Now for my chili recipe!  I’m obviously not a country superstar, nor am I married to a country superstar.  I don’t have my own cooking show on the Food Network, but I still think my chili is pretty good.

Georgia’s Not So Famous Chili (really it’s my grandmother’s recipe)

1 pound ground beef

salt and pepper

1 medium onion, diced

1 large can plain tomatoes

1 teaspoon red chili powder

1 can kidney beans

sugar to taste, optional

1 cup of water

In a large stockpot, saute onion and ground beef.  Add salt, pepper, chili powder, tomatoes and water.  Cook for 1 hour on medium-low heat.  Add water as needed if it starts to get too thick.  Add beans and cook for another 30 minutes.  Taste it for seasoning.  My mom and grandmother always added a pinch of sugar.  You can leave it out if you want.

Enjoy!  My grandmother always ate this chili with Ritz crackers spread with butter on them.  It sounds weird, but it’s really good!
