Around 11:00 this morning, the Hamilton Township Police Department responded to a vehicle explosion on Wrangleboro Road at the entrance to the Atlantic City Expressway.

According to a press release from the Hamilton Township Police Department, a vehicle owned by the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia was transporting a hydrogen tank that was used in a demonstration. When the driver of the car discovered the tank was leaking, he stopped to inspect the situation. When the rear hatch of the car was opened, a large explosion occurred. Passing motorists used fire extinguishers to put out the fire.

The driver, John Deininger, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Atlantic City Medical Center Trauma Unit. The vehicle was destroyed in the explosion.

Wrangleboro Road, in the area of Consumer Square, has since been reopened to traffic.
