If you were planning on plunging into the ocean on New Years Day in Ventnor, the event has been canceled... because of the expected cold weather.

Now, it may sound silly to cancel an event that intentionally brings people out into the cold to jump into a cold ocean because of cold weather (after all, isn't that the point?), but the folks involved are doing it as a safety precaution. In reality, hanging out on the beach in your bathing suit with temperatures in the teens isn't the best idea in the world.

Just this morning, Meteorologist Dan Zarrow said, "Arctic air is here to stay for at least the next week and a half, requiring some serious bundling up. In general, forecast high temperatures will be in the 20s for the foreseeable future — potentially through the first weekend of 2018."

A press release on Ventnor City's website reads...

The Polar Bear Plunge has been cancelled due to safety concerns as temperatures are expected to be 18 degrees New Year's Day.

Mike Weissen, organizer of the Polar Bear Plunge, contacted Mayor Holtzman to discuss cancelling the annual plunge, citing safety concerns for residents and visitors who may be participating. The Mayor discussed with Commissioners Kriebel and Landgraf and all are in agreement that this event should be cancelled this year.

“As disappointing as this is, we would rather err on the side of safety and think cancelling is the right thing for Mr. Weissen to do," said Mayor Holtzman and the City's Commissioners.

This isn't the first time a cold-oriented event has been canceled due to weather. Just a few weeks ago, Six Flags Great Adventure canceled what was supposed to be their part in the world's largest snowball fight -- because it snowed. While, again, sounding silly, it was all due to safety as they didn't want hundreds of people driving while roads were bad.
