Where’s Winter? No Cold Weather or Snow Anytime Soon?

While still technically autumn for a couple more weeks, we often associate December with cold weather and snow... and it doesn't look like either will be in our area anytime soon. (that includes Christmas).

Before we look ahead a few weeks, let's look ahead a few days. It might be possible to wear shorts if you will be out Christmas shopping this weekend. Temperatures, at least on the mainland, should be in the mid 60s this weekend -- that's a good 15 degrees above average for this time of year.

And if you look at AccuWeather's long-range forecast for our area for the next month or so, it appears that temperatures will stay relatively mild with highs in the 40s and 50s from now through mid-January. Now, while a 30-day forecast is obviously not 100 percent accurate, the general consensus is that there's no influx of cold weather, and therefore no snow, in the cards anytime soon. AccuWeather's Brett Rathbun says,

"Snow lovers may have to wait until the new year for any significant snow across the eastern U.S. El Niño is to blame for the lack of snow. While the month of November ended as one of the warmest months on record for many cities across the East, the same could happen in December."

 

That means if you are dreaming of a white Christmas, keep singing that song because it probably won't be happening this year here in South Jersey. As of now, (again, subject to change) AccuWeather says Christmas Day will be in the mid 50s.
