The big news yesterday was the engagement announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. I spent my morning reading the articles about the royal couple as if they were my family.

I wasn't really into the royal family until quite recently. I wasn't this excited when Prince William and Kate Middleton wed. However, about two years ago I got into all things British and now 98% of all of the television I watch comes from the BBC or ITV. Now with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement I am diving in head first into all of the articles and videos I can find.

I find myself counting down the days until Netflix puts out the second season of The Crown.

My question is why?

I love history. My first thought when I think of how obsessed many Americans are with the royal family is what would George Washington think? What would Benjamin Franklin think? What would Adams, Hancock, Hamilton, Jefferson, or Paine think? Are we a disappointment?

I have a funny image in my head of the founding fathers looking down on us and shaking their heads. I can imagine them saying to themselves how hard they worked to get us away from the monarchy in England and now here we are 241 years later fawning over that same monarchy.

Perhaps I am being a tab melodramatic. Perhaps I am really making something out of nothing.
