Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, in fact the two are tied very closely together. May is mental health month. Just as we get a check up for our body, we should also take steps to keep our mind healthy. Here is how I deal with stress...

I am a busy mother of two kids with a job and household to run, and I have to admit that life can get hectic sometimes.  I have been so fortunate to have played sports as a kid and to continue to workout and play tennis to this day.  Sometimes I am tired at the end of the day, but if I just get my sneakers on and get started, I always feel better.  I have never played a tennis match or left the gym and said , "I wish I didn't do that!" Physical activity helps to release natural "feel good" hormones and I am so thankful to have it in my life.  Some other stress relievers - a periodic massage, lunch with friends, getting a good night's sleep, dinner with my family, taking a walk on the beach, and morning coffee to reconnect with my hubby.  My natural tendency is to be on the run, but I have learned that I feel better when I slow down a bit.  I have had to teach myself not to cram ten pounds of stuff into a five pound bag!

How we cope with stress is major part of reducing our risk of mental illness.  We all experience stress in our life.  But when it becomes overwhelming it can lead to serious mental health problems like depression or anxiety disorders.  Mental Health America is the country's leading non-profit dedicated to promoting mental health.
