A 15-year-old male has been charged with shooting -- and now killing -- a 16-year-old in Atlantic City and the county prosecutor is asking when someone will, "give a damn."

The scene unfolded late on June 15th when Atlantic City police responded to the 1000 block of Arctic Avenue for a ShotSpotter alert. Arriving officers located a 16-year-old from Atlantic City with a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

On June 19th, the suspect, a 15-year-old male also from Atlantic City, turned himself into authorities and was arrested.

The 15-year-old male was initially charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. On Tuesday, the shooting victim died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. As a result, charges against the 15-year-old male were upgraded to murder.

In a press release, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner asked a powerful question, "Gun violence is a tragic reality in our society. However, when it effects our youth we sustain an incalculable loss of human potential. My only question is: when will someone from our community stand up enough to give a damn?"

The 15-year-old male who is charged with the fatal shooting remains lodged at the Harborfields Detention Facility.
