Cape May Police Order Lock Down After 911Call of Shots Fired

Cape May Police responded to a 911 call Thursday afternoon reporting shots had been fired by locking down the city schools, putting the Coast Guard on a shelter-in-place order and closing the Wilmington Ave. beach for a time.

After investigating, police determined the call to have been a hoax.

In a statement from police, they said a 911 call was received at 2:53pm by Cape May City Police saying that shots had been fired in the 1800 block of New York Avenue.

Police say that out of an abundance of caution, all necessary procedures were put in place to lock down the city's schools, order a -shelter-in-place at the Coast Guard Training Center and closing the Wilmington Ave. Beach.

The 1800 block of New York Avenue is a quiet, upscale neighborhood of residential homes. Wilmington Avenue intersects with New York Avenue and the Wilmington Ave. Beach is one block down.

Cape May Police say they checked the area for any suspects, spoke with several neighbors and found that nothing had been seen or heard.
