We suspect lines at gas stations across South Jersey will be a little longer than normal today as the state's gas tax will jump by almost a dime per gallon at midnight.

When the clock strikes midnight tonight, the gas tax in the great Garden State will increase by 9.3 cents per gallon. Simply put, if you're paying $2.13/gallon today, you couple be paying $2.23/gallon tomorrow.

And when the calendar turns to October 1st, New Jersey will go from having the 10th highest gas tax in the nation to the 4th -- at 50.4 cents per gallon -- behind only California, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, according to NJ.com.

New Jersey's gas tax had been 14.5 cents per gallon for years, but it was raised in 2016 to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund, which otherwise needed to use all its funds to repay past debts. It went up 22.6 cents a gallon in 2016 and another 13.6 cents a gallon since then, including a 4.3 cent increase in 2018.

As of Wednesday morning, gasbuddy.com was reporting regular unleaded was selling for as low as $1.83/gallon in North Jersey while it was roughly between $2.10 and $2.25 across Atlantic and Cape May Counties.

And while we are all complaining about the price of gas jumping-up a dime, just remember that not too long ago it was well over $3.00/gallon.
