Five Borgata Hotel and Casino Atlantic City employees were honored for their quick thinking and actions in saving the life of a guest at Old Homestead Steak House recently.

The guest, Derek Z., experienced an airway obstruction while dining at Old Homestead. Four members of the Old Homestead waitstaff and the bartender's quick response were critical to Derek's survival.

Derek and his wife returned to Old Homestead to thank his Borgata heroes.

So we may all pick up some of the techniques the Borgata workers used to save Derek's life, the Mayo Clinic gives these directions for clearing someone's airway.

Strike five separate times between the person's shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Give five abdominal thrusts. If back blows don't remove the stuck object, give five abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver. Alternate between five blows and five thrusts until the blockage is dislodged.

Daren Smith, Borgata's Director of Guest Experience congratulated the workers.

👏 “We couldn’t be prouder to have these individuals on our staff; these five employees reacted extremely fast and with no hesitation. Thank you to Lisa Savini (bartender) and the four servers, Baldassare Fiorentino, Ben Gordon, Cesar Corpus, and John Rosboschil, for your heroism.”
