Newest Member of 6ABC Philly Makes Debut
📺 Haverford Native Joins 6ABC as New Sports Anchor/Reporter
📺 Made Move From San Francisco KRON-TV
📺 Makes Debut Behind the Anchor Desk Tonight
For most people in the broadcast business, the goal is to make it to a major market.
It's the equivalent of a ballplayer going through the minors with the goal of making it to the major leagues.
Most broadcasters pay their dues by working at small stations in small towns scattered across the country.
As someone who's done it, I can attest to the fact that part of the life of a broadcaster is surviving those small market experiences and learning your craft.
Working in those small markets means you have to be a jack of all trades, work the most grueling hours, and do it for very low pay.
Most of us would agree that it's a game of attrition.
Who will survive long enough to get that big break finally?
You will never know the names of some very talented people who may have tapped out before hitting it big.
For every face you see on Philadelphia television or radio, there are thousands more who never make it to the big time.
When a new face hits the airwaves in Philadelphia or New York, it's a big deal.
A very big deal.
Tonight, there will be a new face in the 6ABC studio.
His name is Jason Dumas, and he is the new Sports Reporter/Anchor for 6ABC News.
Jason is a native of Haverford, and he did his first live shot on Wednesday but moves behind the desk tonight.
I think I speak for most in the broadcast business when I say those who pay their dues are worthy of our respect.
How's this for paying dues? Jason's career has taken him to,
📺 Bristol, Connecticut
📺 Bismark, North Dakota
📺 Baton Rouge, Louisiana
📺 Hagerstown, Maryland
📺 San Francisco, California
This is a guy who has put in his time.
For his part, this is what Jason had to say about his journey,
I've always had a goal of making it back. But like it does to many, my industry has jaded me a bit. It never impacted my work ethic or daily grind- but i started to realize working in my hometown may never happen. And that was okay. The stars have to align perfectly, which is mostly out of my control. Long as I controlled what I could and stayed true to myself- I'd be good with however my career played out.
His words have special meaning to those of us who traveled the same journey.
Welcome to the big time, Jason. You've earned this shot.
