According to the FDA, apple sauce known to be contaminated by lead, and recalled months ago, was left for sale on shelves at Dollar Tree stores throughout the country.

The apple sauce in question has been linked to serious children's illnesses in 44 states.

The apple sauces in question are WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, Schnucks cinnamon-flavored apple sauce pouches, and Weis cinnamon apple sauce pouches.

The products in question have been linked to illnesses in 500 children.

The FDA issued a recall in October of last year, due to extremely high levels of lead that was found in the apple sauce.

Lead is Particularly Dangerous to Children

Lead is toxic and children are more susceptible to acute toxicity because of their lower body weight.

Symptoms of illness may include headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, and anemia.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a child's exposure to lead can affect physical and mental development.

At very high levels, lead poisoning can lead to death.

Despite the Recall, Products Remained on Shelves in Stores

Despite the recall, authorities in several states found the products remained on the shelves at various Dollar Tree stores.

Authorities warn consumers to check their shelves at home for these products.

They warn that because of their long shelf life, people may have purchased the product months ago, without realizing they still have it in their home.

You should call your pediatrician if you think your child may have consumed any of these products.
