NJ Police Officer Saves Boy Who Fell through Ice on Lake
A New Jersey policeman is being hailed for his courage after going into the frigid water to save an 11-year-old boy who had walked out onto a frozen lake and fallen through the ice.
Policeman Saves Boy From Icy Lake
Officer Dave Brosonski of the West Long Branch Police responded to a call on Monday for a young boy who had fallen through ice on a lake he thought was frozen solid.
Luckily for the boy, Patrolman Brosonski was the first officer on the scene and he is highly trained in water rescues.
The officer saw the boy stranded in the middle of the lake and started planning a way to get through the icy water to save him.
A neighbor ran and got some rope which he tied around the officer so he wouldn't get also stuck in the ice while trying to get to the boy.
The officer's body camera recorded the action as the policeman made his way out through the icy water and grabbed the boy.
The two were then pulled into safety with the rope.
The boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution for hypothermia.
Police Caution Against Going Out on Frozen Lakes
Police say it is never a good idea to go out on a lake you think is frozen.
Ice covering local lakes will never freeze thick enough to walk on. Ice must be at least four inches thick for walking or skating safely.
As the weather warms, ice melts and loses stability and thickness. Icy ponds and lakes that look frozen are not deep enough to support even a child's weight.
