What one New Jersey county is doing before federal food aid runs out
According to Reuters News, almost 42 million people are going to lose food aid because of the United States government shutdown. While Republican and Democrat Politicians continue to play the blame game, millions of Americans are suffering the consequences of partisan politics.
The United States Department of Agriculture announced last week that it would not tap any emergency funds to pay for any food aid not available due to the government shutdown. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is scheduled to lapse on Saturday, November 1st, leaving millions of Americans without government food assistance.
One of the "unintended consequences" from the Government Shutdown, and Political Shell Game is that now many people will turn to local food banks to fill the void without federal food assistance. One South Jersey County Government is being proactive to get ahead of this issue that is coming in November.
What Cape May County Is Doing To Help Local Food Banks
In New Jersey's Southernmost county, the Commissioners approved emergency funding to be distributed to eight food banks located in the local community.
Cape May County Commission Director Leonard Desiderio said that there are 4,000 households in the county that are at risk of losing food assistance because of the federal government shutdown. This funding is meant to be a "stopgap" to help the community while people wait for the Political Shell Game in Washington, DC to end.
A total of $112,000 has been approved by the County Commissioners to be evenly distributed to eight food pantries in Cape May County. Each nonprofit organization will receive $14,000 ahead of November 1st.
At the October 28th County Commissioners meetings, attendees asked if this funding would be available to food pantries if the government shutdown extends into December. Commission Director Desiderio stated that they would stay in contact with the eight community organizations to reevaluate what is needed if no settlement is made by the politicians to re-open the federal government before the end of the calendar year.
