People been talking for years about food insecurity, and the fact that Atlantic City, New Jersey is a food desert.
AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center has stepped-up and is actually doing something about it.
AtlantiCare has unveiled its new Community Mobile Market. They are calling it a grocery store on wheels.
The new AtlantiCare mobile market (vehicle) will stock fresh produce and pantry items … and, the prices are affordable in order to help families throughout Atlantic City.
The AtlantiCare philosophy for the Community Mobile Market is to help promote well-being and improve overall health.
The Michael Charlton era at AtlantiCare has introduced a bold and innovative vision.
About the new Atlantic City Community Mobile Market, Charlton said:
This program underscores our commitment to addressing food insecurity and promoting healthier communities. By bringing fresh, nutritious, affordable food directly to those who need it most, we are taking a significant step toward improving the overall health of our region. This initiative is about more than food — it's about creating lasting change and ensuring everyone has access to the essentials for a healthier life, said Charlton.
The AtlantiCare mobile store currently accept cash and credit card for payments. In the future, they plan to accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to help as many people as possible.
New Jersey has 50 Food Desert Communities, with Atlantic City rabies as the second-highest, proving that the need is great.
The AtlantiCare Community Mobile Market is initially supported by a sponsorship from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), along with generous support from the Gormley and Levine Family Foundations.
The Mobile Market hours of operation are:
- Wednesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at Atlantic Cape Community College's Atlantic City campus.
- Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. ti 11:00 a.m. at the Baltic Plaza Apartments, Starting on June 26, 2924.
AtlantiCare will announce future dates and locations later this summer.
