I've been on a gardening kick lately. I'm all about container gardens — they are great for people like me who live in apartments and want to pretty-up their patios or balconies. Succulents and popular houseplants can add personality (and oxygen) to your home or office year-round; click here for great houseplants for beginners from Bob's Garden Center.

But it's (almost!) spring, so you're probably like me and can't wait to get outside. Here are my five best tips for new gardeners:

1) Don't start too early. We still might get hit with a good frost that can kill things overnight. If you're not the type to watch weather reports for frost warnings and bring plants into your home or garage overnight, another good option is tossing a breathable blanket or cloth over them on cold nights. (Don't use a tarp because a tarp will suffocate the plants.)

2) Learn what creepy crawlies are invited to the party. You actually WANT spiders around your garden and landscaping because they'll eat other harmful bugs, but things like potato bugs can wreak havoc. (Bob's Garden Center educates you about helpful bugs here.)

3) Don't over fertilize. It's really important that you read the labels and follow the directions closely. Too much fertilizer is essentially a chemical burn for a plant. (If you're confused or unsure, don't hesitate to ask the staff at Bob's Garden Center. Whether you prefer organic or traditional fertilizer, they can point you to the products that are right for your situation.)

4) Get the water and sunlight right. Direct vs. indirect, full sun vs. partial sun vs. shade, these details do make a difference for plants. Read the packaging carefully and ask a sales assistant if you're unsure before you plunk down your credit card.

5) Have fun! You're more likely to stick with something you like, right? So choose plants you're interested in, whether that's a brightly colored pot for your balcony, succulents for your desk, herbs that you cook with all the time or a full-on backyard garden.

Along the way, don't hesitate to reach out to my friends at Bob's Garden Center. They have everything you'll need to get started and keep your little plants healthy!
