Self Defense, aka Krav Maga
Every heard of Krav Maga? Me neither, that is, until this past Monday.
"A noncompetitive eclectic self-defense system developed in Israel that involves striking techniques, wrestling and grappling. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and extremely efficient, brutal counter-attacks."
I am a member at Island Gym in Northfield and every other Monday, the Mixed Martial Arts guys from the neighboring store stop by and host a 'Self Defense' class.
The first one (that I attended) was this past Monday. It was a very light workout (knowing the actual classes that the Martial Arts guys offer are MUCH harder!) that taught me how to subdue an attacker. It was basic Level 1 Krav Maga stuff, but still interesting to learn about. The moves are meant to be useful for anyone (of any strength....) against an attacker of any size. Lots of eye gouging, nose punches and groin kicks. Ouch!
I don't know if I would have the nerve to actually try out the moves on an attacker, but here's hoping that I never have to! Definitely check out the next class (it's free for members of Island) on April 9th! You have to sign up at the front desk of Island Gym, Northfield.
