An Atlantic City man has been charged with attempted murder after a teenager from Egg Harbor Township was stabbed during what may have been a racially-motivated attack.

The assault happened around 6:15 Monday afternoon, July 3rd, in the 1600 block of Adriatic Avenue.

At the scene, Atlantic City police officers found an 18-year-old victim from Egg Harbor Township bleeding from his neck.

The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division for treatmemt of the serious but non-life-threatening injury.

An investigation by officers and members of the Criminal Investigations Section determined that the victim was standing with a friend when Tyler Smith approached. Smith questioned why white people were allowed in the neighborhood before stabbing the victim.

Several members of the community attempted to detain Smith but he fled before officers arrived.

Police said during the altercation, Smith dropped his wallet, which helped with his identification.

Shortly after 9 PM Monday, ACPD Ofc. Latray Butcher, while inside the medical center, saw Smith and he was taken into custody without incident.

38-year-old Tyler Smith of Atlantic City has been charged with attempted murder, bias intimidation, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain person not to possess a weapon.

Smith was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
