Gloucester Twp., NJ, Police: Student Struck When Vehicle Fails to Stop For School Bus

A student in Camden County is recovering after being hit by a vehicle as she was crossing a busy road to get to her school bus Thursday morning.

The Gloucester Township Police Department says the accident happened at around 6:30 at the intersection of Hickstown Road and Heatherwood Drive.

According to authorities, a preliminary investigation revealed a school bus with its warning lights flashing was stopped to pick up students that attend Camden County Technical Schools–Gloucester Township Campus.

The victim was attempting to access the bus by crossing the westbound lane of Hickstown Road from Heatherwood Drive. The striking vehicle was traveling Westbound on Hickstown Road, and did not stop for the bus warning systems. The vehicle then struck the student as she crossed the street.

Police said the driver, whose identity has not been released, stopped at the scene. No other students were injured.

The 15-year-old female student was taken to Cooper Hospital in Camden. Police did not provide an update on her condition in a press release late Thursday morning.

Camden County Technical School officials are said to be with the student's family members and they are implementing necessary crisis procedures.

Hickstown Road was closed for over two hours as police cleared the scene.

Officials say this remains a "very active investigation" by the Gloucester Township Police Department's Serious Crash Investigation Team.
