You know those surveys that come out about something bad or unwanted and New Jersey is always at, or close to, #1 on the list? When it comes to how much it costs to insure a new car, the Garden State isn't even close to #1 (woo hoo!).

In fact, New Jersey ranked #18 on the list -- which means, in seventeen other states, it will cost much more to insure a new car.

According to Quadrant Information Services, Michigan is at the top of this survey, where it costs an average of $2,541 to protect a shiny new ride. Louisiana, Oklahoma, Montana, and Washington, DC, make up the top five. New Jersey is all the way down at #18, where it'll cost you about $1,663 for new car insurance.

Maine, South Carolina, and Vermont are the three cheapest states, according to the survey.
