David Ortiz’s F-Bomb At Red Sox Game Approved By FCC Chair

A day after the city of Boston was locked down under a ‘shelter-in-place’ order while a massive manhunt captured the last suspect at large in last Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings, the Boston Red Sox held extended pregame ceremonies at Fenway Park on Saturday to honor the memory of the victims of the attacks and celebrate the Boston police, emergency responders and marathon volunteers.

Back in the Boston lineup for the first time this season, longtime Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, aka ‘Big Papi,’ addressed the crowd after the ceremonial first pitches. In his excitement, Ortiz dropped a loud F-word. You can hear his edited, safe-for-work comments in the video above. :

“This is our f@*#ing city. No one is going to dictate our freedom,” he said.

With the broadcast being aired nationally and locally, Ortiz’s comments were subject to the same Federal Communication Commission guidelines that any other live broadcast would receive. Saturday afternoon on Twitter, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski let Big Papi off the hook for the F-bomb.

Given all that Boston has been through, and considering many of the fans in attendance and at home probably said that same word often during the week-long saga, it’s probably a wise decision by the FCC. Fortunately for the Red Sox, Neil Diamond didn’t continue the profanity trend when he showed up unannounced to sing “Sweet Caroline” in person at Fenway Park on Saturday. The BoSox won the game, 4-3.
