Lauren Alaina ventured way outside of her set list to reward an auditorium full of hard-working high school students in suburban Virgina last week. During a visit to James River High School in Midlothian, Va., the 17-year-old singer sampled hits by U2 and Jason Aldean.

Alaina has been a regular duet partner of Aldean’s lately, singing Kelly Clarkson‘s parts on ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay.’ In the video below (at about the eight minute mark) — after the ‘American Idol‘ runner-up sings U2′s hit ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ — she takes on ‘Dirt Road Anthem.’ Much to the audience’s surprise, she nails the rap verses while stumbling through a chorus that seems more suited to her talents.

It probably doesn’t help that she has three intentionally distracting students onstage with her. The singer had pulled two of the three to her side for a dance contest. They copy her feminine dance moves (when did she learn to shake her hips like that?) before busting out their own over-the-top breakdowns. At one point, she loses her place in the ‘Wildflower’ song ‘One of the Boys.’ The students are hamming it up big time.

All the joking must have had the intended effect on Alaina, as one boy asks her to prom and she doesn’t exactly say no. “I tell you what, I will think about it,” she answers to the delight of the crowd at JRHS.

Alaina’s visit was the a reward for collecting the most toys during the 94.9 Star Country Toy Mountain toy drive. According to MjsBigBlog.com, Alaina visited the school on Jan. 24, between tour stops on the Aldean tour. After a weekend off, the singer will return to the big stage this Thursday in Oklahoma City, Okla.
