A pair of popular grocery stores in our area will be closing up shop by the end of the year.

The Genuardi's supermarkets in both Egg Harbor and Barnegat townships will close this coming December.

Safeway, which is the parent company of Genuaradi's, failed to find a buyer for the supermarkets.

Genuardi's, a Philadelphia-based, family run grocery store, sold nearly all of its Pennsylvania stores earlier this year.

More than 150 people could lose their jobs with the local closings. Employees were told that the store on Fire Road in EHT and Bay Avenue in Barnegat would be closed as of December 15th.

The timing couldn't be worse with the holidays being so close.

Genuardi’s will be the second supermarket, after Pathmark, to close this year in the area. Collectively, these two store closings are going to have a impact on the shopping habits in Atlantic and Southern Ocean County, not to mention the impact on local employment.
