A 19-year-old man from Mays Landing who allegedly stole $5 and a pair of sunglasses from a car is now facing more charges after police say he was responsible for breaking into a house last month.

Around 1:00 Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release, Hamilton Township Police responded to the Festival at Hamilton Shopping Center for the report of a car that had just been burglarized. Cops quickly located the suspect, 19-year-old Elijah Thomas of Mays Landing, and took him into custody without incident.

Cops say as Thomas was walking through the parking lot, he saw a parked car with a partially open window. Thomas allegedly forced the window down, unlocked the vehicle, and removed five dollars in cash and a pair of sunglasses.

Thomas was taken into custody and when interviewed, was also questioned about an unrelated residential burglary that happened on April 10th on Cologne Avenue where someone forced-open a door and took jewelry, electronics, and sports memorabilia.

Thomas was ultimately charged with burglary, theft, and criminal mischief related to the car burglary and also charged with burglary, theft, and criminal mischief related to that  residential burglary.

Thomas was released on a summons per bail reform. Thomas has pending charges related to a commercial burglary that occurred in August, 2016, along with three prior burglary convictions.
