How Much Does A Family Of Four Cost In NJ? [AUDIO]
A new Gallup poll finds many Americans think a family of four needs about $58,000 a year to get by in their community, but most New Jerseyans believe the total should be a lot higher.
"I think we need a lot more than that, probably double," said one shopper on Route 1 in Mercer County.
"To live comfortably, to provide for your kids and your family, about $100,000," another person said.
Other shoppers thought a family of four would need in the neighborhood of $150,00 in New Jersey.
"As a single person I would find it very difficult to live on $58,000 a year. I think everyone in the family has to work, but you really need about $220,000 a year for a family of four," said one woman.
Another shopper had a different approach to the subject.
"One of the barometers of the economy is what it costs a family of 4 to go to a Yankee game," he said. "And you multiply that by 22 - and it's about $87,000. That's how much a family of four needs.
