When you think of various lists that you can be on one that you may not want to be on is a list of places people are leaving. According to Money Pop, "With 50 states in the nation, it's hard to choose where to settle down. One thing is for certain, though, there are some states Americans no longer want to live in. Whether it’s the high cost of living in sunny California or the unemployment rate in Mississippi, people are flocking out of their native states to find greener pastures elsewhere in the United States."

So for New Jersey unfortunately we have ended up on a list we don't wanna be on. The list of states where people are leaving the most! That is the list we find New Jersey on and according to Money Pop although Jersey has some "negatives" it also has some good points, but it still isn't keeping folks here. "The Garden State has a coastline of beaches, some of the best pizza in the nation, family suburbs, and tasty local produce. But none of that is stopping people from leaving New Jersey."

Some of the reasons cited by Money Pop for why people are leaving the Garden State are "according to Yahoo Finance, the top reasons that former residents have cited for leaving were retirement, being closer to family, and getting a new job."  In addition, they cited the high property taxes in New Jersey. According to the Bergen Record, "With some of the highest median home values in the country, this makes New Jersey the most expensive state for property taxes. In this recent report − which ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia by their real estate tax rates "

I have lived in New Jersey my entire life, so yes I am biased and yes I do like Jersey. I take offense when the late-night comic hacks make fun of the Garden State. Yes, there are some things I'd prefer to be better at, mostly economics, but there are also lotta good things here to enjoy. I guess it's how you view things.

The other states that are seeing lots of folks leaving include:

  • California
  • New York
  • Illinois
  • Pennsylvania
  • Massachusetts
  • Washington
  • Colorado
  • Indiana
  • Michigan
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming
  • Alaska
  • Louisiana
  • Ohio
  • Mississippi
  • Iowa
  • Oregon
  • Minnesota
