City Council Taking Steps to Widen Ocean City Boardwalk
The agenda for Thursday's 6 pm meeting of the Ocean City Council includes considering a plan to approve taking the first steps toward widening the narrow north end of the Boardwalk.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, the City Council could sign off on approving $12,000 for permits necessary to widen the Boardwalk from St. James Place to 6th Street.
The first few blocks are about half the width of the Boardwalk beginning at 6th Street.
The Ocean City Boardwalk stretches about 2.5 miles from St. James Place to 23rd Street.
What Approvals Are Needed to Widen Boardwalk?
The City Council's first step in this process would be to approve a contract with an engineering firm to obtain permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection to increase the size of the Boardwalk in this section.
The City Council will also consider a proposal for improvements to the Boardwalk as part of the 2024 municipal budget on Thursday.
The proposal earmarks $5 million for Boardwalk work in 2024.
If the council approves the permitting plan, another meeting would be required to approve the actual work and funding for the project.
The City Council meeting will be held on the third floor of City Hall, 861 Asbury Ave.
