Spirit Air Cuts Routes Nationwide, But Keeps Flights at ACY

The latest news concerning Spirit Airlines' service at Atlantic City International Airport is mixed. Some developments are concerning, others are hopeful.

The good news for South Jersey is Spirit hasn't announced any reductions to flights at Atlantic City International Airport.

Spirit Cuts Staff and Routes Since Its Second Bankruptcy

Last month, ACY's primary carrier filed for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in less than a year after high costs, weak demand, and other lingering problems drove up losses.

The carrier has been racing to slash costs and recently announced plans to cut 40 routes and furlough about one-third of its flight attendants, roughly one-third of its cabin crew.

Spirit plans to end service in Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Chattanooga, Columbia, South Carolina, Hartford, Portland, Oregon, Salt Lake City, and all service to California, including Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, and San Diego.

Spirit said it is planning to reject 12 airport leases and 19 ground handling agreements as the carrier shrinks to cut costs, according to CNBC.

Spirit is in talks with its pilots’ union and is seeking about $100 million in cuts from that group.

Spirit recently announced plans to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants by year's end, representing one-third of its cabin crew.

One route, Spirit's seasonal flight from Atlantic City to Miami, will soon come to an end. Spirit announced that the Atlantic City to Miami service will end on Oct 6th, just two months after launching.

SJTA Data on ACY

According to the Press of Atlantic City, SJTA data shows that travel from Atlantic City International is down 22.6% for the first half of 2025.

489,952 passengers have used ACY so far this year, compared with 633,187 for the same period in 2024.

Another hopeful development for ACY is the start of service on Allegiant Airlines, set to begin on December 4th.

Allegiant plans flights to these Florida destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Petersburg-Clearwater, and Punta Gorda.
