Former Cape May County Official Charged After Alleged HAZMAT Billing Scheme
Cape May Court House, N.J. — A former Cape May County official who oversaw hazardous materials preparedness has been arrested and charged with theft and forgery after investigators say he used an LLC to bill fire departments for HAZMAT training that was also grant-funded.
67-year-old Anthony Robinson of Lower Township was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree theft and two counts of fourth-degree forgery. He was processed and released on a summons pending further court proceedings.
A court-authorized search warrant was also executed at his residence on Briarwood Drive in Lower Township.
How the Scheme Allegedly Worked
Robinson previously served as Director of the Cape May County CBRNE Task Force, which focuses on chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive preparedness.
Investigators say Robinson created an LLC and used it to bill local fire departments for HAZMAT training sessions. According to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, those same training sessions were also funded through the federal Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant on the same dates, meaning the departments were billed for training that was grant-funded.
The prosecutor's office alleges the arrangement resulted in the same training being paid for through both sources.
Investigation Continues
The investigation was conducted by the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit.
