Grant Will Fund Popular Atlantic City Recreation Project [Photos]

The City of Atlantic City, New Jersey, has received a substantial grant, which will help to fund costs to refurbishment the tennis courts at the iconic All Wars Memorial Building.

The grant award is in the amount of $ 19,500 and it comes in the form of a Tennis Venue Services Grant from the United States Tennis Association, USTA).

The All Wars Memorial Building

Is also known as Soldiers Home, U.S. located at 1510 Adriatic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

It is one of Atlantic City’s most important African-American and veterans' landmark buildings.

Atlantic City’s Segregated Past

The significance of Soldier’s Home dates back 1920 and the Rheims Post 564 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars — who staunchly advocated for a veterans' facility.

During this time period, Atlantic City was segregated, and African-American veterans did not have an equivalent facility where they could gather and organize their ranks.

Another Feather In Mayor Marty Small’s Cap

Small has been scoring significant funding for various Atlantic City projects — like Atlantic Avenue Road repairs.

Previous Soldier’s Home Renovation

The city undertook a major $11.2 million renovation beginning in 2005. The project expanded the facility to approximately 29,100 square feet, with three ballrooms, improved kitchens and other amenities. The renovated building reopened in 2008.
