Stolen BMW Flees Longport Police, Officers Don’t Pursue

• Longport police spotted a BMW reported stolen out of Newark
• The driver fled after an attempted traffic stop; officers followed the state's pursuit policy
• Police remind residents to lock vehicles and remove keys

Longport, N.J. — A driver in a stolen BMW fled from police in Longport Sunday afternoon after refusing to stop for an officer. Authorities did not continue pursuing the vehicle in accordance with state policy.

The Longport Police Department said officers spotted a black BMW X6 around 3:09 PM near South 11th and Atlantic Avenues. A registration check confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Newark.

When an officer attempted a traffic stop near South 20th and Atlantic, the driver sped away, continuing down Atlantic Avenue before turning onto South 28th Avenue and crossing the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.

Per the New Jersey Attorney General's Vehicular Pursuit Policy, officers did not continue the chase. Surrounding law enforcement agencies were immediately notified and given the vehicle's registration and identifying information.

Police are reminding residents that vehicle thefts are often crimes of opportunity. Always lock your car, take your keys or key fob, and never leave your vehicle running unattended.
